Central Stress Point vs. Team effort: How to Achieve Sustainable Operations

unnamed

Teams represent the basic structure of how operations such as sales and customer service are organized and managed in companies. Despite the proven power of team effort in sustaining operations and increasing productivity, many organizations fail to stick to it and, instead, create a ‘stress point’ where individuals’ work drive the company’s revenue. How to tackle this problem?

Relying more on teams and less on individuals

Evidently a work done in a team offers many advantages over what is produced by a single person. Among these advantages are the diversity of knowledge and skills that help members to contribute with unique ideas and solutions.

Perspective-taking is yet another great aspect of teamwork whereby members see situations and challenges in different light. This allows rapid emergence of better ideas or approaches in solving problems that otherwise would take ages with individuals.

Building cohesive teams where members complement each other

A characteristic commonly seen in high-performance teams is cohesiveness, a measure of how members are attracted to each other and the resistance of members to leave the group.

Individuals in highly cohesive teams are more cooperative and productive in achieving the goals they set for themselves.

The lack of cohesion within a team working environment adversely affect team performance because of the unnecessary stress and tension that exist among coworkers.

Ultimately, cohesion (or the lack of it) in the workplace can, in the long run, signify the success or demise of a company.

Employing collaboration tools that work for everyone

Technology, including as communication and productivity tools, is often not a concern for individuals. But, when it comes to teams, members might have their personal preference on what to use to pass a message or assign tasks among each other.

For example, in a team, a person who prefer Skype to chat with a fellow member, while another is more comfortable with whatsapp to carry out tasks such as dealing with clients.

It’s essentials for team leaders to assess these differences and find a common ground (a.k.a tool) in form of a web or mobile app that allow better collaboration and productivity without compromising comfort of the team.

Nurturing better communication

Communication is vital to organization’s success in it’s industry. Unlike individual effort, team effort is firmly established on communication. Effective communication allow members (including team leaders) to know the capabilities of coworkers and only assign the tasks that suits the other’s knowledge and skill base.

Most importantly, better communication lead to balanced workload which allow individuals to focus on what’s more important, be it troubleshooting, preparing financial reports or performing any activity that contribute to the growth of the business.
