COVERED TOPICS
Overview of Bed Bug; Behavior & Control Strategies
Ts. Dr. Abdul Hafiz Ab Majid
Associate Professor at Universiti Sains Malaysia
Over the recent years, bedbugs have crawled back into our homes, checked in into hotels, and gaining foothold in a modern world that many thought was free and clear from this pest.
Bed bugs have made a drastic resurgence over the past two decades. Therefore, it is imperative for us to understand their biology, especially the behavioral aspect. Their management methods have been constantly under discussion, whereas some aspects of control techniques such as heat treatments and pesticides are highly deliberated. A proactive and adaptable approach is crucial to effectively manage and reduce bed bug infestations which this presentation will showcase.
What follows is updated information on effectiveness of products, studies on insecticide susceptibility, concerns of insecticide resistance and chemical strategies proposed to overcome resistance in modern bed bug populations.
The Silent Threat: Insecticide Resistance & the Future of Public Health
Dr. Intan Haslina Ishak
Senior Lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia
The silent threat of insecticide resistance poses a risk to the effectiveness of pest control programs. To ensure success, a strategic resistance management approach, emphasizing the use of efficacious insecticides tailored to the resistance status of target pests. The limited choice of insecticides for public health, coupled with the lack of innovative control tools, underscores the pressing need to monitor and understand various insecticide resistance mechanisms. This is vital for maintaining the efficacy of pest control initiatives and ensuring a sustainable future in the battle against evolving resistance.
The World Of Ectoparasites Ticks & Fleas
Dr. Hamdan Ahmad
Former Associate Professor at Universiti Sains Malaysia
Ticks and fleas are some tiny, troublesome creatures. These pests are not only irritating to your pets but can also pose serious health risks. This presentation attempts to provide a better understanding of ticks and fleas and their impact on your pets as well as human wellbeing, and explore effective prevention and treatment measures.
Identifying flea and tick infestations early is crucial for prompt action. Some common signs include excessive scratching, biting, and licking, red or irritated skin, hair loss, and the presence of small dark specks (flea dirt) in your pet’s fur. Ticks are more visible and can be felt as small bumps on your pet’s skin, especially after outdoor activities.
Preventing fleas and ticks is easier and safer than dealing with an infestation
